Switched to SquareSpace

A few weeks ago I decided to consolidate all of my various web sites, blogs, etc. into a single place that would be easier for me to manage, tweak, etc. I thought about keeping everything on TypePad, but for reasons I can’t really put my finger on, TypePad didn’t seem right anymore — maybe it was too blog-centric. On the other hand, I was hosting my other pages up on .me from Apple and that was fine except I wanted more automation than a locally crafted, client-dependent website. A search for an alternative began.

Fixing audio problems in "Dragon Age: Origins" (PS3)

Over the weekend I picked up a copy of BioWare's “Dragon Age: Origins” and I've found it to be a great way to watch time fly by (good thing on the entertainment front, bad thing on the trying-to-get-stuff-done one). I'm enjoying the character design, cinematic narrative (with surprisingly good humor), engaging combat, and for the most part, a great soundtrack. I say for the most part because one of the things the frustrates me has been choppy audio playback.

Made Aperture work again in Snow Leopard

So I went to launch Aperture 2.1.4 in Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.2) today and much to my surprise, it crashed. It bounced once and tossed up the error dialogue. I did the usual things — pulled out the plug-ins from all library folders, removed the preferences, reinstalled Aperture, reinstalled the update, reinstalled 10.6.2 — and nothing worked. I resorted to the Internet and Google…

Why bother with manual focus and avoid Photoshop?

From time to time people ask why in this modern age I bother with manual focus photography? People are also often amazed to learn that I actively avoid the heavy use of tools such as Photoshop for other image post-processing. I mean, heck, I’m a technology guy so I should use all the technology, right? Wrong.

For me, photography is both an intellectually as well as physically creative medium, and in my life where technology plays such a huge role I find it necessary to set some of the tools aside and challenge myself in different ways.
